Cable-Stayed Bridge between Piers 3 and 4

Engineer / Architect: Cambridge Seven Assoc., Inc. (general); Johnson Mirmiran Thompson (substructure); FTL/Happold (superstructure)
Location: Baltimore Harbor, between Piers 3 and 4 (near the National Aquarium)
Baltimore, MD
Year Built: 1998
Structural Form: Cable-stayed bridge; steel
Historical Details: N/A
Technical Details: In a cable-stayed bridge, the load travels from the bridge deck up through the cables (which are in tension) and into the towers. The towers are in compression and carry the load down to the foundation. The asymmetric geometry of this particular structure generates some interesting structural behavior.
